Video Project

The average teenager in the US spends about 4.5 hours on social media per day. Thats over 24 hours in a whole week. An entire day of our waking hours lost every week just to scrolling.
In every waking moment, she’s on her phone. There are times during these ordinary moments that she forgets what she’s doing and scrolls for longer than the actual task. Scrolling is so incredibly ingrained in her everyday life. She falls asleep, scrolling, and her phone falls out of her hand. She doesn’t stop until her body physically shuts off.
The static noise represents the brain fog and the urge to go back to scrolling when she tries to focus on a task without being on her phone.
This final scene truly encapsulates how depressing scrolling the entire day can be. She’s surrounded by melancholic music and the dark, with her sole focus on the flashing lights in front of her. The slow paced music and text was intentional, as a contrast to the high speed short videos on social media.
I relied on symbolism, repetition, contrast, and relatability to bring awareness to the viewers about how normalized excessive scrolling has become and to reflect on their current lifestyles.
